Would you eat in a McDonald's vegetarian restaurant?

As McDonald's plans to open its first vegetarian restaurants in India, two vegetarians argue for and against the idea

Kavitha Rao v Andrew Tobert

A regular McDonald's in New Delhi
McDonald's has announced it is to open vegetarian-only restaurants in India.

Kavitha Rao: McDon't do it!
rao

As a lifelong vegetarian and as an Indian living in Bangalore, I have been eating cheap fast food all my life. But not the skanky plastic garbage peddled by Maccy D's, KFC and their ilk. Instead, I might have a crisp, lightly browned dosa (rice and lentil crepe) with coconut chutney for breakfast, pav bhaji (bread rolls with a buttery vegetable hash) for lunch and chaat (a spicy mix of potatoes, yoghurt, onions, tomatoes, cilantro and crispy bits) for a snack. Usually, these will cost me about Rs 50 (about 50p), less than a McDonald's veggie burger, which goes for Rs 59. They will be healthier, tastier, fresher.

The recent announcement by McDonald's that it is launching a veggie restaurant in India had me bellowing "What fresh hell is this?" It's the culinary equivalent of selling ice to Inuits. Inuits may not have more than a hundred words for snow – apparently it's an urban myth – but I can assure you that Indians have many more than a hundred varieties of veggie fast food, not just a plain one-size-fits-all potato patty.

Oh, I have tried McDonald's veggie offerings, the ones carefully created for my primitive brown taste buds after years of research. Once. The dull McAloo Tikki burger is not a patch on the infinitely more delicious crispy alu tikkis with tamarind chutney found at any street vendor. Their McSpicy Paneer is a cop-out, falling back on that bland veggie standby: paneer. It's the insipid nut roast of India, the tofu of timidity.

Cleanliness, you say? Nope. Even if you are a foreigner with a stomach like tissue paper, you are better off eating piping hot, fresh dosas from a busy street vendor than you are eating stale fast food. India has always had homegrown chains of veggie fast food joints which are every bit as clean and quality conscious as McDonald's, perhaps even more so. And I'd rather give my money to a small business owner than a McCorporation.

But hey, I am not going to sermonise. Or even tell you, Morgan Spurlock-style, that veggie burgers are killing you slowly. I don't need to. After almost 16 years in India, McDonald's has just over 250 outlets here, which, in such a massive country, is pocket change. I suspect that Indians are smart enough to know which side of their pav bhaji is buttered. Sure, broke students and tubby kids hankering after plastic toys will continue to eat there, but there will also be plenty like me who shun the Golden Arches in favour of a truly happy and tasty meal.

Andrew Tobert: I'm lovin' it!
tobert

There are few more powerful symbols than the Golden Arches. For me, they represent at once the homogenising influence of market forces, the evil of industrialised agriculture, the obesity crisis. And the last time I was truly happy.

McDonald's, from the first time I crossed its air-conditioned threshold, has offered a place of sanctuary and calm. The smell of whatever-that-smell-is wafting through the air and the happy children, joyous with additives swirling around their blood streams. This is where I've had my best thoughts, my most cherished memories. This is where I can truly be me.

And I'm not alone. From Shanghai to Chicago, kids, pensioners, lawyers and students come and are welcome. However much people might not want this to be true, McDonald's is the global restaurant – the place that unites humanity. You might find better, cheaper food elsewhere, but that's not going to convince Parisian school kids or London lawyers coming back for more.

I used to go three times a week (and yes, dear readers, I was a fat child). I wasn't just lovin' it, I was stalking it on Facebook, and naming our soon-to-be-children. But three months ago, my life changed for ever. I became vegetarian (something about climate change and global hunger, but I forget the details). My place of solace was now closed off.

Of course when I walk by a restaurant, it looks as it always has. As I stand on the street corner, I see people laughing, enjoying themselves. I want to go in, and share the things that make us human. But I know I can't, the temptations will be too much. The Chicken Selects, the Big Mac, the fries (I could go on), so delicious and so stunningly cheap. I miss them. A lot. But I made my choice, and I must accept the consequences. So there's me, outside. An outcast in a meat-eating world. But perhaps not for much longer.

That's why a McDonald's veggie restaurant in India fills me with unadulterated joy and hope. Yes, there are haterz, there always are. And to them I say, whatevs. Indians won't all become obese overnight, and their cuisine isn't going to suddenly disappear. Maybe Indian vegetarians, like their meat-eating peers the world over, watch McDonald's ads and think "you know what, that looks cool". And isn't that a wonderful thing? That we live in a world where people can pick and choose the best of global culture, regardless of where they were born? McDonald's is the global emancipator. May its benevolence spread far and wide.

But first, could the veggie outlets spread to London? Say, Hackney, E9. Then I won't feel a stab of jealousy every time I pass a branch. And maybe then I can stop resenting being a vegetarian, and start actually enjoying it. Yes, those really will be the (Mc)Salad days.

  1. Would I eat in a McDonald’s vegetarian restaurant? Sure. Why not? Even though Indians may be against it, due to the wide variety of restaurants available for prices relative to McDonald’s, opening a McDonald’s vegetarian restaurant won’t do them any harm. The worst that could happen is that McDonald’s will close down, but I think this is unlikely. Anyway, McDonald’s vegetarian menus may also become a tourist attraction once it is available in India. I understand that Indians would keep their cultural food rather eat modernized fast food, but it would be nice to have something different once in a while.

  2. This article shows the different opinions of two different people. One of whom is a person who has been vegetarian all her life and a person who claims he is vegetarian. I agree with Kavitha's writing saying that there shouldn't be a McDonald’s veggie restaurant. First of all, as she mentioned in the article McDonald's opening Veggie restaurants in India is the same as selling ice to the Inuit. This means that it won’t go very well. Indian food is definitely better than any Big Mac or Double Cheeseburger out there and if tourists are not suited to Indian foods, they can always go to one out of 250 McDonald’s outlets in India.

I’ve seen a video about what is in a McDonald’s Burger patty. Apparently the beef patty that they use is not a 100% beef. Only a small percentage is made up of real beef, and the rest is said to have mixed with Wood pulp which is a common ingredient of making paper. The so called patty will then be sprayed with a chemical which makes the patty have a smoked beef smell when it is grilled. The video also showed how a McDonald’s Burger will last for about a month before it even begins rapid decomposition.

    1. Widy , it seems like you know a lot of things about mcdonald , or if i may say your favorite junk-food restaurant is McDonald , right? Same with me , and my favorite menu is Double Cheeseburgers ! And my friend told me too that , the ingredient of McD's food have already mixed-up, for example like the meat is not pure chicken or beef , it has already mixed-up by another meat like pork, so it can be a serious problem if it's true. And about the vegetarian menu , I think it's a great idea to do what Indian's McDonald do. So people don't think about the bad impact of McDonald's food anymore. Or maybe McD can adopt the system of Pizza Hut which provides salad menu in their restaurant. And McDonald's veggie restaurant will be much better than that , will be much healthier i think because the menu is purely made by a vegetarian , so it can be the best breakthrough that they ever made.

    2. For getting the market's attention, I think McD's vegetarian restaurant will take a long time to be as big as the original McDonalds. And I believe whether it is a vegetarian restaurant or the original McDonalds's restaurant, McDonalds will keep on using ingredients just as what Widy mentioned above. And what's the point going to McDonalds vegetarian restaurant ? You will still getting unhealthy foods. And instead of making crazy innovation like that, McDonalds can try to change their pulp ingredients to a better one. I won't mind paying a little bit more expensive for that rather than getting sick because of eating McDonalds's product. And to be honest, I have never eaten McDonald's product anymore since I heard the news that Widy mentioned.

  3. Actually, I don't support McDonald`s Veggie Restaurant because the trademark of McDonald is always the Big Mac and the fried chicken(in Asian Country, chicken are more popular than beef, so people tend to buy the fried chicken) but I would like to support McDonald to add some Vegetarian Menus.

    1. well, dude I'm a bit confuse with your statements here.

      "..Actually, I don't support McDonald`s Veggie Restaurant.."
      and

  4. Vegetarian McDonald? I don't think I'll buy that, because I'm not a vegetarian. I also think if McDonald actually makes it, it won't be a "real vegetarian food". I believe they'll add some ingredients which isn't for vegetarians to make the food tastier. I eat McDonald but not a lover of it like Andrew Tobert was. I agree that McDonald represent globalization. We can find its outlets almost in the entire world. I understand why McDonald decided to open its first vegetarian outlet in India. You can see that in India the ingredients of the food are almost the same like vegetarian food and many Indian people themselves are vegetarian. But I think McDonald should think other strategies to market it, because as we read from the first article by Kavitha Rao, Indian people are not stupid. They'll think twice about the price and the taste before buy it. Besides that, McDonald also needs to compete but still respects small businesses of vegetarian food in India so that their customers see that McDonald is a big firm with good manner.

  5. I don't agree with the vegetarian restaurant idea. Currently, McDonald have salad in their menu. I don't know whether there's this menu in Indonesia or not, but they have it at some country outside Indonesia. This salad is not doing well in the market, most people still buy burger and fried chicken anyway. McDonald is kinda famous for the not healthy foods, and i think it contradicts against vegetarian way of life. I'm sure there are a lot of better vegetarian foods and restaurants at India, so i think McDonald will not do well in their vegetarian restaurant business.

  6. What’s the point of going to Vegetarian McDonalds? I mean, my purpose of going to McDonald’s is to eat their burgers, fries, and be happy. Every time I hear “McDonald’s,” there are few things that come to my mind: Oil, heat, fat, calories, and frozen ingredients. But I have to admit that every time I eat McDonald’s meal I do feel happier.
When I was living in Hong Kong, McDonald’s was the cheapest thing I can find in the entire country. Grannies, grandpas, kids, maids, students, even me and my classmates find McDonald’s the easiest and cheapest restaurant. One day, I went to have my few hundredths times McDonald’s meal with my friend: Amy. I ordered burger with extra fries and hot milk tea, while Amy ordered salad. Yes, awkward. I asked her why did she order salad and she answered me, “I’m want to live healthy, I’m avoiding oily foods especially McDonald’s burgers.” You know what I told her right after we left McDonald’s? I told her that she ordered salad with fried chicken fillet as topping. It’s not that I don’t support her in being healthy, but she could’ve spent 20 dollars less and get fresh vegetables in Chinese restaurants. In addition, they claimed they’re “Halal” when they sell pork meal and use pork oil to cook because that’s the main reason why foods taste so good!
My point is I don’t think Vegetarian McDonald’s will survive in India or countries that don’t eat meat. First, it’s going to be difficult for them to gain trust and to socialize their product to the people.

  7. There will definitely some pros and cons when making a decision, for instance when McDonald’s plans to open its first vegetarian restaurant in India. I will not go with against this plan. For me, there will be no specific disadvantage for the society in India when McDonald’s opens a vegetarian restaurant there. Even for me I can see more positive over the negative things when McDonald’s opens a vegetarian restaurant, for example people who are in hurry, can choose to eat in a fast food restaurant like McDonald’s. It can also be used as a tourist attraction like what Ginny mentioned, because I think they will be curious to taste the food in the McDonald’s veggie restaurants as it will be different from the general menu in most of other countries. I would definitely eat in a McDonald’s veggie restaurant because I wonder how it is actually different in terms of the menu and the taste of the food.

  8. After Mc Donald's has changed their strategy to trying to offer healthier food by offering salads, wraps and veggie burgers, the veggie restaurant is the next step and I think it works. I would eat there, but not here in Indonesia of course. Back at home, Mc Donald's is perfect for a midnight snack or if you do not have a lot of time on the road. You stop, buy, eat and go. Cheap and quick. But in Indonesia it is everywhere like that. Mc Donald's is so expensive here compared to the other options you have and sometimes takes longer than eating a martabak telur a night.

So I would say, veggie yes, but only in a country where Mc Donald's is really considered fast food and not lifestyle food like in Indonesia.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Would I? No, I will not eat in McDonald Vegetarian restaurant. Actually, I only go to McDonald for their Ice Cream and that’s it.
It is kind of weird if McDonald try to offer veggie stuff. McDonald is Burger and Burger is not only McDonald. Kavitha stated she is living in India and thinks that local fast food are already have a good taste, cheaper and even healthier than the veggie burger. Why would they open vegetarian restaurant In India? With their images already been contaminated by videos showing their cooking processes & their ingredients, I think people in India will choose local food instead of McDonald’s Veggie. McDonald has to find another way to attract customer other than restaurant with veggie menu, I think.

  10. McDonald’s vegetarian restaurant sounds pretty weird for me, but I would like to try it. McDonald is one of my favorite fast-food restaurants. This restaurant is a part of my childhood memories and I still remember how happy I was when my parents took me there. I realize that this kind of food is not healthy at all, but in my opinion, it’s fine to eat this kind of food once in a while. In addition, vegetarians’ fast-food restaurants are quite rare. Thus, I think McDonald’s idea to open a vegetarian restaurant is such a good strategy to differ it from its competitors.

  11. First,I would like to say yes to eat in a McDonald's vegetarian restaurant. This is a good news for those vegan who really avoid eating junk food. This sounds good to me because I can taste the healthy McDonald. This could be a big change for fast food market. Providing people healthy food quickly is the best choice for now. This could be a challenge for McDonald. Because I think they really need to make people still say 'I'm lovin' it' after eating veggie food and beverages there. Anyway I support this idea, and I'll be waiting for McDonald vegetarian restaurant in Indonesia.

  12. Seems really interesting topic, MacDonald’s vegetarian restaurant. Being vegetarian its not only about eating a healthy food like vegetables but its about respect for sentient life and environtment as well. In this term maccas company tray to product healthier food as they produce vege food. But in the other hand they still not respect to the environtment because they still use plastic for the example. And if maccas succeed with their vegetarian restaurant in india automatically its gonna be a bad impact for a local vegetarian restaurant there. Might be just because its cleaner or something, but I think indian should see from the positive point. It can be their motivation to increase their quality of local foods. But if there is still a problem might be government can make a limit to maccas expansion in india.but its gonna be so hard because that’s just any kind of globalization effect.

Why maccas company choose to open vegetarian restaurant there is because, india is the biggest vegetarian country so its mean there is a big market fo them. They make a vegge restaurant not only because they want to do better thing to environment but there is an economic motif as well. but I think there is nothing wrong to try Maccas vegetarian restaurant someday. I hope they will open it in indonesia

  13. I think it is not a good idea. I would never eat in a McDonald's vegetarian restaurant. For me, it doesn't reflect the brand image. Indeed, people who go to McDonald's don't go to eat healthy food but to have a little pleasure from time to time. For example, I have never eaten a salad in McDonald's, but still burgers like Big Mac. If I want to eat a salad, I don't go to this kind of fast food. Maybe it will work in India, but in France I don't think so.

  14. I agree with the opening of a McDonald vegetarian restaurants in India. Besides, it is beneficial for the vegetarians, it also attracts the attention of many people. as far as i know, most of the indians are prohibited to consume beef. so, it should also benefit the people of India itself. as for me, I am interested in trying McDonald’s vegetarian restaurant, because i eat almost everything and I've never been to a vegetarian restaurant before.

  15. When I heard the word Mcdonald, I immediately pictured with fried chicken, Big Mac, fries, etc. There is a big temptation to buy some for my meal. The above article is an article that contains 2 different opinions about Mcdonald's Veggie Restaurant. If I could choose, I probably will not buy products sold by Mcdonald's Veggie Restaurant, because I'm not a vegetarian. Although I love vegetables, I probably would not buy the product. But, I will not refuse if the restaurant was open as this will be good news for the vegetarians who rarely eat fast food. However, I think Mcdonald does not need to open that special restaurant. Simply by adding a vegetarian menu in a restaurant Mcdonald and do not use oil made from meat.

  16. McDonald's image is already glued to meat and junk food. So I think opening a McDonald's vegetarian restaurant in India is not a bad idea, but it will take quite a long time. Most people go to McDonald's for a quick and cheap meal. If McDonald's is to be a vegetarian restaurant, then it's like, what's the point of going to McDonald's anymore? People should also realize that they can't go to McDonald's for healthy foods, considering how McDonald's specialize in fast foods and such foods are less likely to be very healthy. People must have known by now that if they want healthy foods, they can go to other restaurants other than the ones similar to McDonald's, or cook their own foods.

  17. This article has two different opinion about McDonald's veggie. I think it is good opinion for MacDonald to open new innovation. MacDonald well-known around the world with its product, such as burger, chicken, etc, but they can provide for people who is vegetarian. MacDonald can provide them with new innovation, by making imitate meat, they can produce the same taste with the ordinary taste of MacDonalds but the difference is in the based. I have tried vegetarian food, and the taste like the real meat, they can imitate meat creatively . I think it is good to make new innovation.

  18. In my opinion both people got their pro and cons and most certainly have couple of good points. However I don't think the arguments given are relevant, because its not so much about why or why not people would eat at a veggie MD, it more about the question "are there enough people to support a veggie MD ". Furthermore, why open up a MD veggie, if MD clearly stands for burgers?! This clearly intervenes with the current market strategy. In addition, how disappointed would a "walk in" customer be, who craves a burger and all he can purchase is veggie stuff. I recon I would be best for MD to extend the vegetarian variety of the existing restaurants and see how the veggie products sell.

  19. McDonalds opens a veggie restaurant.... After they introduced wrappes and salads this is just the next step and no big surprise for me. I do not say that it fits to the image of McDonalds I have in mind, but still the idea can work. If I think about McDonalds there are burgers and unhealthy food. However, why not offering a menu also fitting to the needs of vegetarians? If a whole restaurant is needed only for vegetarians is questionable but we will see in the future if the concept will work or not.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Actually, I think a vegetarian restaurant would run quite well although India is not the best choice for the location in my opinion. The variety of vegetarian food in India is enormous also due to the fact the many Indians don't have enough money to spend it for meat! Besides Indian food is one of the most tasty and spicy ones all over the world. However, the Indian population is quite large which makes the country a good business market.
McDonald's already opened a salad branch in Germany. It wants to increase it's reputation for healthy food by designing the store in a vivid and fresh green furniture and decoration.
Poor Andrew Tobert who is still craving burgers and misses his second home. But I think he made a good decision and it would be important for others to follow. I already tried to be a vegetarian but I failed because it tastes so good! However, I think it is easier in Asia to become a Veggie because there is a big choice of tasty vegetable dishes.

  21. McD's vegan restaurant? For me, that's a terrible idea. People want a healthy one not a plastic-taste-food like they made and if they made any veggie product, how horrible would it taste?. McD maybe wants to prove that McD's product is compatible for all. Dear McDonald's, I'm hating you

  22. In my opinion it became a tough challenges for McDonald's in order to open a new vegetarian concepts. As customer point of view when we heard about McDonald's things what you will be imagine? it is healthy food restaurants that offering menu's for well-balanced calories needs or automatically you imagine about fast food restaurants that makes a lot of people obesity which provide any plastic to pack their meals and also not Eco-friendly things.

Somehow, i thought that many consumer's perceives about McDonald's are unhealthy fast food restaurants things. So if McDonald's wants to build new image or something a fresh concept idea for vegetarian restaurants in India it is really tough but still not impossible.

  23. I disagree about the McDonald's Vegetarian because it is distruck the image of the real McDonald that famous with their BigMac. In business, it is very difficult and terrible idea to change the image of the company. The Buyer will confused about what McDonald is. There are so many examples that show the failure of the company by changing the image. For instance "GAP". In 1994, they changed only the logo of the company and introduced GAP with low price. In that time, the sales was decreasing, because people said that GAP lost their luxurious image. We know that people buy GAP because GAP is considered as luxurious brand. By introducing low price, GAP lost their image and no body wants to buy the product. In my opinion, It will happen also in McDonalds that introduce vegetarian. Most people come to McDonald to buy the BigMac not the other menu.

  24. Both pro and cons have positive and negative side. but i think there will be few people that support Mc'd to open the vegetarian restaurant. If i hear the word Mc'd i always thinks about junk food and unhealthy food, so what is the point to open the vegetarian restaurant if it will be use the same unhealthy ingredients. i personally will not go to eat at the Mc'd vegetarian restaurant if it comes to indonesia because i think it is the worst place to eat vegetables.

  25. McDonald's vegetarian restaurant? It is a bit funny to me, because McD is well-known with their Big Mac that contains beef and some other menus with chicken. But as McD wants to provide foods to vegetarians, so it is not a bad idea. Maybe it would be better if they add some vegetarian foods in their menu instead of open the McD vegetarian restaurant.

    1. Hai Anin, I agree with you! Actually, it’s not a bad idea to open McD’s vegetarian restaurant. But I think it would be better if McD not change all of beef or chicken menus with vegetable. By add some new vegetable menus, people will be more open to accept the changes. Because like Anin said, McD is well-known with their Big Mac that contains beef and some other menus with chicken.

  26. What I realized about India and some other Asian countries is that the fast food restaurants like MD are always full with people. Everytime I passed a MD in India it was totally crowded. They like "the American Way" and those who can afford it, love to go there. It is more like a lifestyle to them. Opening a veggie MD would be a great idea since most of the population in India is vegeterian PLUS Indian people do not eat beef. MD stands for a typical beef burger and since this is anyway not available in India, why not try the veggie alternative? Great idea!

    ReplyDelete
  27. It's a good idea to make MCD as vegetarian restaurant, but the image of mcd will not be the same as before. Everyone notice that MCD is one of the popular junk food restaurant in the world. If MCD add vegetarian restaurant, people won't believe it since there's a big different from junk food and vegetarian food. One is non-healthy while the other is healthy. So, it's better if MCD still keep up their name as junk food restaurant.

  28. In my opinion, it is not a so bad idea for Mc Donald's to open a vegetarian restaurant. The company is not known for his healthy food, so it can be a good way to change opinion. Moreover, India is a good country to implant the concept, because in Europe we are not big fans of vegetarian food, whereas Indian food is more healthy and there is more vegetables, they will probably go there more often than people from other country (in western countries we eat a lot of beef, in Asia they eat a lot of chicken...).
If a vegetarian Mc Donald's restaurant opens in my city, I will probably go there, because I don't really like Mc Donald's and for me the food is too fat, so it's a good alternative if I want to eat in a fast food, but to eat healthy food.

  29. As far as I know, McDonald use all sorts of preservatives, taste amplifier in all of their menus. I have ever seen from YouTube about how they produce the chicken and cows; For me, how they make them are also in an instant (of course they use some kind of hormone injections to make them grow fast, and big). However, I'm not sure about vegetarian menus. Will they taste as fresh as the real vegetables. I think McDonald must spend a lot in research and development ,so they can produce a perfect vegetarian foods". Last but not least, I will not eat in McDonald vegetarian restaurant unless a friend gives a treat.

  30. McDonald, to its core, is definitely NOT destined to be a vegetarian restaurant. It is not that cheap nor is it healthy. But then, nothing is healthy in such excessive amounts that people usually consume McDonalds products in. Though i think it's a good try for them to pretend to care about vegetarian, if not for the money they'll be receiving, they should just stay with the fast-food concept they are. McDonalds being vegetarian is not such a brilliant idea.

  31. Eating vegetarian menu in McDonald for somehow (in my opinion) seems ridiculous. I was a vegan a few years back but then I decided to not being a vegan anymore and I was not doing it because I love animal but because I wanted to get skinny. And back then (when I was a vegan) places like McDonald, KFC, Wendy’s and other junk food restaurants were the places that I avoided to go to. The reason why I think eating vegetarian menu in McDonald is ridiculous is because McDonald is a junk food restaurant that services unhealthy food and some say that McDonald is one of the main reasons why there are so many obese people in the USA, so having healthy food in unhealthy restaurant seems irrational. If it were me, I wouldn’t try the vegetarian menu, just because McDonald is not the right place to go to when you want to eat vegetarian menu. I have other refrences like Subway to eat healthy and fresh meal with concept of fast food restaurant.

  32. There are some people opinion that the purpose of McDonald produce vegetarian food is to create a good image on their product. It is because that their image in the market is unhealthy food. They want to prove to their customers that they also can produce vegetarian food. In my opinion, the purpose of McDonald make the vegetarian food it is because to fulfill their customer need. For example, McDonald vegetarian is open in India it is because majority of Indian people they like to eat vegetarian food based on their faith. To win the competition in India market, McDonald need to produce what are their customers’ needs and wants. If there is McDonald vegetarian in Indonesia, I want to try it. I want to know how is the taste f fast food but it is vegetarian and they said that it is healthy. But I think it will not appear in Indonesia because vegetarian is not what Indonesian customers’ needs.

    ReplyDelete
  33. It is a good strategy to diversify and adjust the company’s product. But although McDonald done that, they should able to serve their food quickly. Since that is the core value of McDonald. And by selling a vegetarian menu in McDonald, it will really have a big demand in countries which citizens love vegetables. Imagine if the children want a Big Mac or the other McDonald burger, and their parents do not like an unhealthy food. My question is, if McDonald serve a vegetarian menu, do the parents order the vegetarian menu or not? The answer is yes.
And that is why McDonald has rice and chicken menu in Indonesia. Because Indonesian always eat rice, not burger or fries. Therefore in countries which citizen are concern about their healthy, McDonald should provide vegetarian menus.

  34. I think it is a great idea from the McDonald, they knew that there is huge market for vegetarian in India. Indeed they will take the opportunity to increase its market share. Brilliant. However, its still and always be fast food, which is very identical with junk food or unhealthy food. People go to McDonald not to eat healthy food, they knew it. At this point, it is not align with the vegetarian food. but for me, i will never eat vegetarian food at McD because i think BigMac is the best of it.

  35. That the new breakthrough from McDonald. If they build vegetarian McDonald in India, they will get a lot of profit. Not just that, maybe they can be the leader of vegetarian fast food restaurant and many restaurant will follow what they are doing. Maybe some people will think this restaurant is unhealthy food and no one will eat at that place, but if McDonald can convince people they sell a healthy food, people will eat at that place over and over again. After they open a vegetarian McDonald in India, maybe they can make it in another country.

  36. McDonald as an international restaurant will always keep exist in the food and beverage industry by following the market trends. Nowadays, many people more concern about their health. Most of people believe that being vegetarian will keep them healthy. Starting from India which is consist of a lot of vegan, McDonald start to realized its idea by establishing McDonald's vegetarian. Unfortunately, most of people forget that McDonald's vegetarian is still a junk food which include in unhealthy food. Therefore, it will be no difference eating regular McDonald with McDonald's vegetarian. Both of them are identical.

  37. Business activities are demanding innovations all the time. As one of the purposes of business is to provide what society needs, McDonald aims to expand their business. This is not talking about either region or management. But McDonald perceives a brand-new opportunity which is opening the vegetarian restaurant under their big umbrella. For me personally, it won’t work because McDonald has been known as the biggest fast-food restaurant in the world. I also doubt whether the vegan will attracted by vegetarian restaurant which is provided by McDonald. I think vegan prefer find another vegetarian restaurant rather than vegetarian restaurant from McDonald.

  38. Fist I want say thank you for posting this article. MC Donald is the best company in the world. They have friendly stuff, very healthy food and the customer all look like models. I love MC Donald and I think what ever they are planning to do in the future will work. I am hundred per cent sure because there are a lot of smart people in the world and those smart people will always buy food at MC Donald. And I have one question for the people out there who say that MC Donald is not healthy and good and delicious: If so, why does the Bic Mac always comes with salad? Please always buy your food at MC Donald. There are just advantages like the following: It is very healthy (I mentioned that one above but I have to mentioned again, I simply have to), You never have to cook again, It is so cheap and for every Bic Mac you buy MC Donald will donate thousand US$ to NGOs. Thanks and selmat makan.

  39. McDonald’s plan to open its first vegetarian restaurants in India was a very good idea. They try to make a new dimension of their business to generate another profit. But, i don’t think it will be effective. Why? Because, when they open their first vegetarian restaurants, it just like making a new brands. People, instinctively, would think that the product is still unproven. Maybe a few people will try it, a few. For me, i think it would be more beneficial if they make a vegetarian menu not a vegetarian restaurant. By doing that, people won’t see it as a new brands, but as another McD’s product.

  40. McD open vegetarian food ? wow that so amazing . It is because in India culture there is a culture that warning people to eat meat. If McD open their restaurant in Indonesia especially in Yogyakarta city i want that so much. In can make our hbehavior to consume meat can decrease. i know that vegetarian food taste similar to the original meat and i think that is so delicios if people get high cholesterol. It can advatagesly with the people who have problem with their fat. with the vegetarian food they can reduce their fat.

  41. Vegetarian food is good for us to decrease cholesterol level in our body. However, eating vegetarian food in McD is not a good idea. Although we don't eat meat there, we must eat the veggies which are not organic. As Adrianus said that McD processes the meat inorganically, so McD must process the veggies inorganically too. The chemical to grow the veggies will be a toxic in our body. Although veggies have low cholesterol, if we consume too much toxic, we won't be healthy as well. If we want to be healthy by eating vegetarian food, we'd better to make it at home rather than buying food from McD which is famous with junk food, fast food, and unhealthy food.

  42. So, McDonald's open a veggie restaurant? In my opinion, expanding their business to a vegetarian restaurant business unit is not a good idea for McDonald's. I mean, come on, everyone knows that McDonald's has been wellknown for its cheese burger and crispy-oily-friedchicken and now suddenly they want to change their image to a potato burger and boiled spinach? I do not think it will workout there. I do believe that there are a lot of stalls or restaurants who sell vegetarian menus in way cheaper price than McDonald's. I would like to suggest here that McDonald's should stay focus on the way they used to be, focus on their business, focus on their target market, and do not mess up with their plan A.

  43. A McDonald's Vegetarian fast food chain in India? I don't think it's a very good idea. It's true that opening a veggie restaurant in India might look like a good idea since most of Indians are vegetarian, they might attract a large market, but will they be able to compete with small Indian businesses that provide the same products. To me if I'd rather eat in a small veggie restaurant because I bet the food will be more delicious because of the spices they offer. Furthermore by establishing a veggie fast food chain it'll ruin McDonald's image, as it has been well known for its burgers and fried chicken.

  44. Me, myself, i wont eat at a mcdonald's vegetarian restaurant. McD is basically a fast food restaurant so even if the food is vegetarian food, it will be useless. The nutrition is not going to be guaranteed. We don't know how they process their veggies like how they made their patties. I also agree with Ruby, like what McD already did in the olympics as the official food, vegetarian foods will also ruin McD's image.

  45. McDonalds have always been related to big calorie food products so i think that making a vegetarian mcdonald outlet wouldnt be a good idea. People already have negative views on the rumours circulating about their products so if they do have a vegetarian outlet, they would have to show that their new products are of the utmost quality, that is unless they want to incur losses.

  46. It makes sense that McCorporation is trying to reach the vegetarian market. It is actually one of the strength of this fast food : american way of life image, cheap meals and adapting menu to culture preferences. That's why I tend to agree with Andrew Tobert : Why not proposing a menu (maybe not opening a all mc chain dedicated to, it wouldn't be Mcdonnald anymore) with no meet?
However, I am wondering if in terms of price, Mc donnald could succeed to design a cheap vegetarian menu? Vegetarians are, I think, quite concerned about heath and where the food come from. They would be resistant to eat GMO vegetables...
